Umpirer, Manager

I  didn't start. playing. hockey until I was Nineteen years old where I played for Fareham Hockey club .I reached a reasonable standard of hockey 3rd team captain  for a number of years being my highest level .I played most sport in my life time but hockey has been my favorite
When I had to give up playing when I was 53 I wondered what I was going to do on a Saturday if not playing hockey so I decided to try umpiring
As a player I was never the umpires favorite, always getting into trouble so taking up umpiring to a lot of people seemed  a strange way forward .As it happened I got on very well and I've reached Level 2 so far .I am coming to Kenya to umpire but to also to look after the team with management duties

I join the tour to Nairobi as Team Manager, bringing with me a lifelong involvement in hockey and many years of experience within the sport. I played extensively throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s and have remained closely connected to the game both on and off the pitch.Over the years I have been involved in coaching and supporting hockey at a high level, working with respected clubs including Havant, Portsmouth and Indian Gymkhana, as well as contributing to representative county teams in Hampshire. Hockey has been a significant part of my life and I am delighted to continue that involvement on this tour.I am accompanied on the tour by my wife, Pushpinder, who also comes from a strong hockey background. Born into a hockey family, she has followed the sport from an early age. Her father, Ari Thind, played an important role in the development of hockey in Kenya, helping to produce many Kenyan international players from the Nyanza province, and also served the sport as an international umpire. This tour to Nairobi therefore carries special significance, linking family heritage in Kenyan hockey with the continuing spirit of the game today.

I currently play for fareham in south prem div 1. I was part of our m2s squad to win south prem div 2 early last season.
I’m a versatile defender who also thinks they’re a striker at times. But that idea quickly gets shut down by my captain. My biggest influence in my hockey is Chris Davey snr, I played with him for too long when I was young and thought that I needed to get as far away as possible from him. I am currently the captain of the Havant 1st XI and have played more than 150 national league games for the club. I first started playing at Weymouth Hockey Club and played there for 5 seasons, before moving to Havant in 2010 where I continue to play to this day. Hopefully, if I remain fit enough, I’m aiming to play for England Over 35s next year.

My journey in hockey began at the Nairobi Sikh Union Hockey Club, a place that shaped not only my game but also my values and lifelong love for the sport. From an early age, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a strong hockey culture, and it was there that my passion truly took root.At the age of 15, I had the incredible honour of being selected to represent the Kenya national team. Wearing my country’s colours at such a young age remains one of the proudest moments of my life. I was privileged to be part of the squad that competed in the first Hockey World Cup in Barcelona — an experience that was both humbling and unforgettable, marking a significant chapter in my playing career. One of the highlights of my time representing Kenya was winning the Africa Cup, a victory that reflected the dedication, teamwork, and spirit of the players I had the honour to stand alongside. My hockey journey later took me to the United Kingdom, where I continued to play at a competitive level. I was proud to represent Havant Hockey Club during a successful period that saw us crowned England hockey champions. I also had the privilege of playing for Slough Hockey Club, where we achieved success on the European stage by winning the European Club Championship.Looking back, hockey has given me opportunities and experiences beyond anything I could have imagined — from representing my country to playing alongside and against outstanding players across the world. More importantly, it has given me lifelong friendships and a deep connection to a global hockey community.I remain grateful for every moment the game has given me and proud to have been part of its journey across generations and continents.

Born on October 20, 1971I started playing hockey in 1980 after a visit from my first coach. Unlike my friends, I've remained loyal to this great sport ever since, even though I've shown considerably more talent for other sports. As a youth, I played for a small club with only a few players. While this was very demanding, we were a very close-knit group, so every extra mile we had to walk was gladly done for our best friends!
Later, I changed clubs and quickly became a player-coach, probably because I'm not one to keep my mouth shut and I've always enjoyed utilizing the diverse skills of different players in a way that benefits the team the most.
Despite several knee injuries, I wanted to remain active, so I changed clubs. Although a regular starter, by my third year the team preferred me to be on the sidelines rather than on the field, so I took on the role of coach once again.
Towards the end of my playing career, I couldn't keep running up and down the right sideline all the time anymore, and I also didn't want to be constantly tagging along with a striker. So I decided to use my defensive skills to score goals myself! Luckily, even while I was coaching, I had the opportunity to get involved with HC Mosquito. This club brings together hockey players from all over Germany to participate in various tournaments. What fascinates me about this sport:This sport connects people in the best way! I wish humanity would behave more like hockey players. Every opponent is treated with respect, and even if things get heated, everyone meets up after the final whistle, clears things up, and enjoys a drink together! The coach has to let me play because…I'm exhausted after just a short time and finally shut up!Hobbies besides hockey: Traveling the world and getting to know new cultures and people.

As a child in the 1980s, I played for a few years at the Sport Club Charlottenburg (SCC).When I turned 25, my sister told me :
I was getting fat and lazy and that fishing wasn’t a sport. She took me to the Berliner Sport Verein (BSV), and I started playing hockey again. After a few years, I switched to the Berliner Sport Club (BSC) and played all the way up to the senior level.Due to my job, I wasn’t able to play hockey for over 10 years. In 2024, Martin Steinhorst asked me if I could help out because the Mosquitos didn’t have enough players for a tournament. I played with them, and my enthusiasm for hockey was reawakened. I looked for a hockey team to play with regularly in my new hometown of Aachen. Currently, I play for the Aachen Hockey Club (AHC) and the Mosquitos. Thanks to my sister, I haven't become fat and lazy. I can run pretty fast and for long distances, and I'm in great shape when it comes to standing at the bar.
